Fly Directly to Key West:

*Planning your Key West getaway? Check out our detailed itinerary for maximizing your time in paradise!

  • Best for: convenience, maximizing your vacation time, those who don’t want to worry about the hassle of driving and finding parking
  • Cons: can be expensive, usually requires connecting flights, limited flight time options

Yep, you read that right. You can fly directly into Key West! This is best option if you’re looking to minimize travel time and get to your vacation with as little effort as possible (I don’t blame you). This is also a great option if you’re coming from the Miami/ Fort Lauderdale, Florida or other Florida areas that offer direct flights (there are only a few).

That said, there are a few downsides to flying direct to Key West:

  1. It is often much more expensive
  2. There are few to no direct flights (unless you’re already coming from somewhere in Florida).

That said, flying direct is definitely the fastest route to Key West and likely the easiest way to get there. Most flights typically connect through Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, and from there it’s a quick 50ish minute flight to Key West International Airport (airport code EYW). After arrival, you can either rent a car or grab an Uber/ taxi to your accommodation.

You’ll find Key West International Airport easy to navigate and close to wherever you’re staying so this is definitely a good option for a little less fuss.

To Key West By Land

  • Best for: those on a budget, or those who like the scenic route
  • Cons: can potentially take longer depending on the flight layover alternative, parking can be a challenge

Okay, maybe you can’t technically get to Key West solely by land – it is an island after all! But you can drive through the keys by way of the Overseas Highway.

If you’re not in a huge hurry and a fan of the scenic route, the Overseas Highway is the way to go! If coming in from outside of Florida, you can fly into Ft. Lauderdale or Miami where flight prices tend to be very affordable. Then you’ll rent a car and head through US-1 South.

In total, the drive will take about 3 and a half hours, but trust me, if you have the time the experience is worth it! As you make your way through the keys you’ll drive over stretches of highways surrounded by ocean on either side as far as the eye can see. It’s nothing short of magical!

HOT TIP: I definitely recommend splurging on a convertible for your rental because 1. It’ll allow you the ultimate view and 2. Treat-yo-self! Just make sure you’re starting the drive with plenty of daylight.

Or, Key West by Sea

  • Best for: those who love the scenic route, but want the convenience of not having to drive
  • Cons: you’ll have to plan your trip around the ferry schedule, ferry only runs seasonally due to weather safety

On a boat, ferry, or cruise! There’s a number of services out there to transport from major ports to Key West by sea.

The best known Key West ferry with an affordable airport to fly into is The Key West Express ferry in Fort Myers. You’ll grab a taxi or shuttle from the airport then board the ferry. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy the ocean views with a tropical drink in hand. In just a few short hours you’ll land and head to your accommodation by Uber or Taxi.

HOT TIP: If you purchase your tickets at least 8 days in advance you can receive a discounted fare!

Key West also a common stop for Carnival and many other cruise lines throughout the Caribbean. With this, you can make Key West a part of a larger adventure.
